What is a Health certificate for? A Health certificate, or Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI), is governed by each state. And for Colorado a health cert is valid for 30 days from the date of horse inspection. It certifies that the horses inspected appear free from infectious, communicable or contagious diseases. CVI’s are required for interstate travel and often requested by private entities, like events or boarding stables when horses travel.

Why do we recommend spring vaccinations? Equine vaccinations are an annual preventative health measure to decrease or prevent specific disease. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has designated these vaccinations into two groups, core vaccinations and elective vaccinations.
The Core Vaccines are Rabies, West Nile Virus, Eastern and Western Equine Encephalomyelitis and Tetanus. Of these 5 inoculations 3 of them are mosquito borne and so we often try to booster these vaccines before the onset of the mosquito seasons. The elective vaccine list is based more on geographic location, herd size and exposure risk or travel on the horses and, age of the horse. This could include but is not limited to Influenza, Rhinopneumonitis, Strangles and others.
